ORGANISATIONS have pledged to fight ageism throughout County Durham.
Thirteen groups, including County Durham and Tees Valley Health Authority and Durham County Council, have signed a pledge to fight prejudice.
They represent health organisations, social services and district councils and have promised to recognise older people's rights to equal health treatment and care.
The Age Concern Champions' Pledge promises to involve older people in decision-making, listen to their concerns and respect their cultural differences.
It was signed at the Pioneering Care Centre, in Newton Aycliffe.
Harriet Gibbon, of Age Concern in County Durham, said: "Signing this pledge shows the champions' commitment to prioritising the needs of older people in County Durham and Darlington.
"They have a vital role to play in fighting for higher standards of health and social care for older people, and we very much welcome this public pledge to challenge age discrimination and to involve a diverse range of older people in improving their care."
