THE ancient custom of beating the bounds is to be continued when a group marks a public right of way across the Tunstall Hills, in Sunderland.
The tradition dates from the Middle Ages when children were led around the parish boundaries by their elders.
During the walk landmarks would be pointed out to the children to ensure rights of way would be remembered if landowners tried to stop public access by building walls and fences.
The tradition has been taken over by the Tunstall Hills Protection Group, which formed ten years ago to publicise a campaign to preserve the area for public access.
Sunday's walk starts at 2pm from opposite the Hollymere pub, at the junction of Leechmere Road and Toll Bar Road, in Sunderland.
