Rate relief for helping hands
PUB landlords who offer postal services, as well as pulling pints, are to be given a cash boost by a local authority. Hambleton District Council has extended a scheme of rate relief for rural post offices and shops. It means that where post offices are opened up in pubs, rate relief can be applied for. There are two such operations in Hambleton, at Raskelf and Kirklington. The council leader, Councillor June Imeson said: "The closure of rural post offices has been an issue for some time. They not only provide an essential service for the community, but are seen as a focal point for residents. These pubs are using free space in their premises to provide this service, and it is important that we support them as part of an on-going commitment to rural businesses."
PARK PICNIC: Yorkshire Cancer Research's summer jazz picnic, organised by the charity's Ripon committee, will take place on June 29 at Swinton Park, Masham. Music will be provided by the Dave Challis Dixie Dudes and the Rob Donnelly Band. The evening will end with a fireworks display. For further information, contact Pat Greensit on (01765) 689293.
