A SCHEME aimed at securing the future of an anti-crime spy camera system in Hambleton has taken a step forward.

Members of the district council's cabinet have agreed plans to create a new control room in Northallerton.

The current closed-circuit television CCTV monitoring operation will move from North Yorkshire Police headquarters in Racecourse Lane to the council's civic centre later this year. It follows the police's controversial decision to pull out of the scheme earlier this year.

Council leader June Imeson said: "Centralising the scheme at the civic centre is a direct result of the council taking over management of the cameras.

"It will enable us to fulfil our commitment to continue the existing monitoring operation as well as to expand the CCTV scheme, which will bring more of the district under our umbrella of cameras."

The authority has 41 cameras covering the town centres and car parks of Northallerton and Thirsk, and there are plans to roll the scheme out to Stokesley.

Work is already under way to convert the former emergency room at the civic centre into a control room.

The system is expected to be up and running at Stone Cross by October
