PEOPLE in the North-East will come face-to-face with the region's Roman heritage in an English Heritage best look-alike competition.

A poster of Ashleigh Carr, 13, of Hebburn, Tyneside, has already been printed to encourage people with Roman characteristics to take part in the competition.

It is hoped that up to 50 other lookalikes will end up on posters across properties on Hadrian's Wall, which is a World Heritage site.

The contest is part of a nationwide programme of events for Museums and Galleries Month, which starts today.

English Heritage will also run a children's art competition to draw a Roman god. Mystery treasure trails to reveal 50 Roman faces will be held at Corbridge, Chesters and Housesteads, all on Hadrian's Wall.

Peter Bromley, regional director of English Heritage, said: "There is an opportunity for the whole family to take part by sending us photographs or emails with pictures of families and friends who look like the male and female Roman figures depicted on Roman artefacts found at Corbridge."

Entry is free with admission to the sites. Prices range from £3 for adults to £1.40 for children. Call (01434) 632349 for further details.
