A TEAM of North-East butchers has scooped a top prize at the first national barbecue championships.
The Cock of the North team won the best product award in the Guild of Q Butchers' competition with Yorkshire Rose - pork steak filled with spicy black pudding, marinated in olive oil and chilli.
Harry Coates, who has shops in Trimdon Village and Coxhoe, County Durham, was joined by Doug Nicholson from Whitley Bay, north Tyneside, and Mark Turnbull, of Alnwick, Northumberland, in the team.
Mr Coates said: "Each team was given a barbecue to work on, a sack of charcoal and a box of matches - and that was all the help we got from the organisers.
"We were given an exact time slot when we had to have our products presented hot to the judges. The whole thing was about timing and how we cooked, presented and garnished it.
