A MOTHER told yesterday of her son's courage and zest for life after he lost a five-year battle against cancer.
Just over two weeks ago, Guy Francis was told by doctors that his body was unable to withstand any more treatment, following months of chemotherapy.
Despite the news, the 23-year-old Teesside University student was determined to live life to the full in his final days.
He became engaged to long-term girlfriend Rebecca Scott and enjoyed celebrations with his parents, Michael and Rosalyn, and sister Lucinda, of York.
A Middlesbrough FC fan, Guy hired a stretch limousine to take himself and friends on a day out to the FA Cup semi-final at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium.
Mrs Francis said: "He packed in so much. He was so positive and fought until the very end. He was a true inspiration to us all."
Guy was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a form of bone cancer in his leg, just before his 18th birthday. His thigh and knee bones were replaced and he went into remission.
He went on to pass his A-levels at Fulford School, in York, and to study marketing at university, but further tumours developed and more operations followed. After being told there was to be no more treatment, the university awarded Guy his degree on merit.
A celebration of his life will take place on Friday at St Helen's Church, Wheldrake, York, at 2pm.
