CHILDREN have contributed to a wall hanging to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee visit to the North-East.
As part of their studies at the Children's University after-school club, year five pupils from Quarry View Primary School, Sunderland, were asked to sketch things that they thought would interest the Queen.
Their drawings of leaves, plants and flowers have joined images of Sunderland's industrial heritage on a fabric collage, which will be on display at the Museum and Winter Gardens when the Queen visits, on Tuesday.
Vicki Campbell, year five teacher at Quarry View, said: "The 12 best attendees from the after-school club were invited to take part, from the 30 or so children involved, as a kind of reward.
"The Children's University initiative is designed to help improve literacy levels and it has certainly helped.
"Every Tuesday night for eight weeks, children, teachers, parents and learning mentors have been popping down to the Museum and Winter Gardens to learn more about the attractions."
Jo Cunningham, education officer at the Museum and Winter Gardens, said: "We invited the Children's University group to design the wall hanging because of all the hard work they have put in.
"The facilities are open until 5pm, so it is the perfect place for after-school groups to learn about their city and the outside world.
"What better way to celebrate this educational partnership than by creating this wall hanging for the Queen.
