A clean-up campaign will be extended in recognition of people's efforts.
Spring Clean Hartlepool, initially a month-long blitz on litter and other rubbish, was due to run throughout April. Now, the initiative is to continue throughout this month.
Coordinated by Hartlepool Borough Council's Pride in Hartlepool initiative, it aims improve the environment.
Andrea Bishop, Pride in Hartlepool officer, said: "We have been delighted with the response of townspeople who have come forward in large numbers to support Spring Clean Hartlepool.
"Some have taken part in larger organised clean-ups, while others have simply organised litter picks in their own neighbourhoods. It really doesn't matter how large or small the events are, they all help to make the town a cleaner and more attractive place.
"A number of events are still to take place and we are keen to keep the momentum going, so that is why we have taken the decision to extend the campaign."
Two of the highest profile events arranged so far have involved a litter pick at the Fish Sands, on the Headland, and a clean-up led by the council's countryside wardens at Sea-ton Common.
Others included a tidy-up at Greatham Beck by the Beck Buddies, a group of youngsters who have adopted a stretch of the beck where it runs through the Fens Estate.
