KEVIN DARLEY'S bid to secure a second champion jockey's title is set to receive a timely boost at Redcar today where he should once again be among the winners on a six-race card sponsored exclusively by Manny Bernstein Bookmakers.
Two of Darley's best mounts, Dispol Peto (2.20) and Dispol Rock (4.50), have been provided courtesy of local handler David Barron.
Barron has been reluctant to employ a stable jockey over recent years, preferring instead to pick and choose as he sees fit. It's an old-fashioned common-sense policy, which also has the added bonus of giving the punter a good idea as to whether the horse is strongly fancied or not.
The fact that he has booked Darley to partner his pair suggests both should be in the shake-up, starting with Dispol Peto in the opening two-year-old Maiden Auction Stakes.
Barron's youngster made a pleasing enough debut at Ripon last month when third to Mick Channon's Machynleth. On that occasion Dispol Peto showed blistering early pace from the gate, leading his field a merry dance until lack of peak fitness told inside the final furlong.
With that outing under his belt, the selection, a 5,500 guineas son of the speedy sire Petong, should be cherry-ripe in his bid to account for his main rival, Outeast.
In the closing mile-and-three-furlong Handicap, Darley will have to be at his most persuasive to coax home Dispol Rock (4.50).
The latter is a big bulldozer of a gelding, however he does seem to lack a finishing kick.
But such negative factors can sometimes be overcome by tactical awareness, and in that particular department, Darley has few peers.
Chepstow-based trainer Milton Bradley has the happy knack of keeping his horses sweet however many times he sends them out to do battle.
It will therefore be no surprise if Milton's Whizz Kid (3.50) completes a quick-fire double in the five-furlong Fillies' Handicap.
Whizz Kid added to her already substantial career earnings by comfortably beating 18 rivals over a similar trip at Bath on Tuesday.
This afternoon's contest appears to be marginally softer than that extremely competitive affair, helping to offset the eight-year-old mare's 6lbs penalty.
Richard Hannon has an excellent record at Brighton, a trend all set to be continued at the Sussex track via Hurricane Alan (2.00) and Big Bopper (3.00).
The latter has an especially good chance having won at the course over a mile last time out.
