THE Under-15s produced their best rugby of the season, away to Ottley.
After ten minutes Mark Zissler picked up the ball from the base of the scrum, dummied a pass to the outside half, and stepped inside the opposing flanker to score between the posts, which he converted to make it 7-0.
This was soon followed by a strong individual run from Ben Charlton who broke three tackles and finally, unselfishly, drew the full-back and then released Jack Else to score in the corner. Mowden's confidence appeared infectious and the whole team continued to work hard for each other. Jason Elliott took a pass on his 22 metre line and set off down the centre of the pitch on one of his characteristic, jinxing runs.
This would have resulted in the try of the match if his pass to Else, in support again, hadn't been slightly forward.
Ottley came back with a converted try, just before half-time, with a solo run from their national 400 metre champion. With this being the last game of the season, Mowden made five changes at half-time to involve the whole squad. Despite the fact Ottley came back strongly, Mowden's resolve increased and they closed down Ottley with good tackling, stifling their usual mobile backs.
In extra time Jason Todd pounced on a loose ball, kicking it into the in-goal area, and outsprinted the Ottley defence to ground it for Mowden's third try. The 17-7 win for Mowden was indeed a milestone, considering the calibre of the opposition.
This was a fitting end to Mowden's most successful season and thanks must go to all members of the squad for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
