Thirsk could see the return of its street fair later this year.
Hambleton District Council has been asked by local fairground operator Crows to allow a traditional street fair to be held in the market place in August.
Parish councils, Thirsk Town Council and other groups will now be asked for their initial views, prior to a report being presented to district councillors.
Hambleton's director of planning and environmental health, Steve Quartermain, said: "The town is already home to an annual fair at Thirsk Racecourse, but this would be in the town centre.
"The request is for a traditional street fair over a three-day period, very like the fairs that used to be held in the town and along the lines of Stokesley's annual fair.
"It is vital, however, that we consult with local people before a decision is taken."
Mr Quartermain said the proposal would be discussed by the council's cabinet within the next two months.
