Susan Shepley and Linda Ithuralde came through an exciting competition to win this pairs competition from a big field and in front of a large, enthusiastic audience but they were stretched in the Final, which went to the deciding fifth leg.
The competition was played on two boards. The semi finals on board one saw Maureen Woodruff and Judith Smith beat Evelyn and Lynn Vitty, whilst Susan Shepley and Linda Ithuralde beat Clare Stewart and Marian Hesp. In the final on this board, Linda Ithuralde came through against Maureen Woodroff and Judith Smith.
On board two, Betty Chapman and Janice Warriner beat Norma Parkin and Jackie Clark, whilst Dawn Homer and Susanne McNeil beat Gail Abbott and Eileen Graham. Betty Chapman and Janice Warriner then qualified for the final by beating Dawn Homer and Susanne McNeil.
Susan Shepley and Linda Ithuralde of the Carrs Hotel, West Cornforth took the first leg of the final when both teams were down to the double. However betty Chapman and Janice Warriner from Crook came back strongly to take the next two legs, although both were close finishes. The fourth proved another tight game but the West Cornforth pair managed to level. The decider was a bit of an anticlimax in view of the close earlier games for Susan Shepley and Linda Ithuralde went through to an easy victory.
