TIME and tide wait for no man - not even runners in one of the North-East's most popular multi-terrain races.
Organisers of the Pier to Pier race between South Shields and Sunderland have discovered that a high tide will prevent athletes from negotiating part of the course on the beach at Whitburn and have put the race back a week until Sunday, May 26.
The race, which is organised by Sunderland Strollers, is unusual because it allows competitors to choose any route between South Shields and Roker Piers, following cliff-top paths past Marsden Rock and Souter Point lighthouse and along the beach from Whitburn. But runners must stay off the highway at all times.
Race organiser Phil Tweddell does not think that the new date will deter runners and is expecting a field of up to 600 athletes, who will all receive a fleece jacket instead of the usual T-shirt at the finish on the beach at Roker.
"I would advise any runners thinking of turning out to get their entries in quickly," he said.
The entry fee is £8 (£9 non-club runners) and further information can be obtained from Tweddell on 0191 5487552.
* The North of England Men's Track and Field Leagues get underway today with matches at Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough (Division 2NE) and Monkton Stadium, Jarrow (Div 3NE & 4NE).
* The annual Coxhoe multi-terrain race will be held from Coxhoe Leisure Centre tomorrow, starting at 10am.
