BUDDING sports stars are being invited to enter the Darlington Young Sportswinner of the Year competition.

A winner will be announced each month until the final in December, when an overall winner will be announced.

Last year's winner, runner Richard Smith, launched the competition yesterday at the Eastbourne Sports Complex.

He broke the UK under-23 300m hurdles record last month and has been invited to the Commonwealth Games trials in June.

But event organiser Natalie Curgenven said that youngsters did not need to excel to take part, adding: "We also look at enthusiasm and dedication."

Monthly winners will be chosen in June, July, September, October and November.

The first monthly presentation will be for martial arts, squash, badminton, hockey and football. Nominations must be in by Friday, May 24.

Nominees must live in Darlington borough or be a member of a Darlington sports group or local school pupil.

The award is sponsored by Orange, the Master Skills Sporting Academy and Darlington Borough Council.

Entry forms can be obtained from Janet Cooper or Natalie Curgenven at the Eastbourne Sports Complex, the Dolphin Centre or Dixon Sports. Nominations can also be made via www.communigate.co.uk/ne/darlingtonsportswinnersscheme
