A Middlesbrough company will help make a child smile as it celebrates its first birthday this month. At Home Furnishing, at Cannon Park, has pledged £10 for every day it has been in business to the TFM Radio charity, Make A Child Smile. That means £3,650 for the charity, which helps disadvantaged children in the Teesside area. Marcus Dicken, managing director of At Home, said: "It's great to give something back to our local community. We've had an incredible year and we felt this was a great opportunity to share our success and help a fantastic cause."

HOSPICE CASH: Pupils at a Middlesbrough school have raised more than £1,000 for Teesside Hospice with their entrepreneurial skills. The youngsters from St Claire's Primary School, Acklam, sold more than 1,000 £1 mouse badges to raise the cash for the hospice, where teacher Vicki White's mother was looked after.

Parish ceilidh: A ceilidh takes place in Skelton Civic Hall, east Cleveland, tonight at 8pm. Tickets are £3.50, or £3 for senior citizens, and include a pie and peas supper. It has been organised by Skelton and Brotton Parish Council and tickets are available from the council office on (01287) 653848 or parish mayor Doreen Rudland on (01287) 677336. All proceeds will go to the East Cleveland Hospital and North Skelton Day Centre.

SINGING STARS: Two singing sisters will launch a village flower festival tonight. Harpist Anita Aslin and her sister, mezzo soprano Charlotte Aslin, will perform in St Mary's Church, Kirkby Fleetham, near Northallerton, from 7pm. The event launches the church's spring flower festival, which takes place from 10am today until 4pm on Monday. RETIREMENT PARTY: A surprise party was held for the manager of an off-licence at Richmond, North Yorkshire, who retired after 17 years in the job. Martin Kirby, 65, ran the Wine Cellar in King Street. He began working at the shop when it was Blayney's, and saw it through changes to Berkley Wines and then Wine Cellar. Mr Kirby's successor is Kim Waller, who has worked at the wine store for seven years.

NEW NURSERY: A nursery is to open in Walmgate, York, following the closure of the Your Angels group last year. Walmgate Day Nursery will cater for children aged up to five.

ROAD CLOSURE: Drivers in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, are being warned of the temporary closure of a section of the Sand Hutton Lodge to Braithwaite Bridge road for essential drainage work, which will be carried out between Monday and Friday next week.

HOTEL MASTS: Hutchison 3G UK plans to put three 1.7-metre mobile phone masts on chimney stacks at the Nevilles Cross Hotel, Darlington Road, Durham. An application for the scheme has been lodged with Durham City Council.
