VISITORS to a Darlington pet shop were given a chance to find out how dogs can be trained to carry out tasks for disabled owners.

Pets at Home, at Darlington Retail Park, held the event as part of the chain's national fundraising for the Dogs For The Disabled charity.

The chain hopes to raise £100,000, and the running total has already passed £61,000.

Carol Goodman, with her pet Anton, visited the store, on Saturday, to demonstrate the ability of a trained dog.

The training allows the owner to have a permanent assistant to carry out everyday tasks. These include retrieving items such as cordless telephones, letters and newspapers, keys and pens; opening and closing doors, switching on lights and alarms, pulling washing out of a washing machine and carrying shopping
