SEVEN hours of live music raised hundreds of pounds for a North-East hospital on Saturday.

Amelia's Charity Rockfest, at the Mill House, Blackfell, near Washington, Wearside, saw local acts performing to help raise money for gym facilities for children at the limb unit of Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

The event was organised by brothers Graeme and Mike Ross, from Durham, whose mother, Amelia, was a patient at the hospital.

A blood clot led to thrombosis for Durham businesswoman Mrs Ross, and she was forced to have a leg amputated.

During their visits, the family realised that youngsters using the unit were taking longer to recover from operations than they should, because of the lack of a gym.

After several acoustic sets, the brothers' band, Taller Than, led a series of performances by some of the region's leading acts.

Other bands which took to the stage in the venue's marquee included Mother Sugar, Stone Coda, 101, Adam Cole, Jonathan Boyle and the Caffrey Brothers.

The event received the backing of former North-East model Heather Mills, the fiancee of ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, who lost a leg following an accident.

The concert raised more than £600.
