COUNCILLORS are working with police to catch thieves who stole newly planted trees and flowers from a Stockton cemetery.
Less than two weeks ago, Stockton Borough Council workers spent a full day planting flower containers to try to brighten up Durham Road cemetery.
Many of the plants have been ripped up and stolen, including two dwarf pines, and three large juniper trees.
Councillor Paul Kirton, the council's cabinet member for central Stockton, said he was disgusted by the theft.
"These people clearly have no respect for families and seem to think that local council tax players should provide them with plants.
"The incident was particularly upsetting because visitors to the cemetery had commented how nice the flowers and trees looked.
"We will do everything in our power to catch those responsible and are currently working with police and studying video tape footage from the site."
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact police on (01642) 302226
