A GEM of a display is going on show at a popular North-East museum.

Killhope Lead Mining Museum, in Weardale, has launched a permanent exhibition featuring North Pennines minerals.

Called the Sir Kingsley Dunham exhibition, after one of the country's most eminent geologists, it has been provided by the Friends of Killhope.

Sir Kingsley Dunham, who died last year, lived in Durham and was director of the British Geological Survey.

Museum manager Ian Forbes said: "The exhibition fills a gap at Killhope. North Pennines minerals are famous all over the world. They are incredibly beautiful, colourful and spectacular to look at, but there was nowhere in the area where they were on permanent display.

"We have long wanted to bring the wow factor to the museum and are delighted that the Friends of Killhope have made this possible.

"Sir Kingsley Dunham's heart was always in the North Pennines and he was president of the Friends of Killhope since its formation. He would have been delighted with the exhibition."
