THE deadline for the submission for tenders for the redevelopment of one of North Yorkshire's leading venues has closed.
Of the original 11 bidders interested in the contract for York's Barbican, five were invited to submit detailed proposals and four of them have done so.
Each of the proposals will be subjected to detailed scrutiny before being presented to city councillors.
The timetable for redevelopment would mean completion of the work in the middle of 2005 with a full programme of public consultation before it gets under way, which should be next year.
The head of the authority's leisure office, Charlie Croft, said: "The council wants to ensure that high-quality leisure facilities will continue to be provided on the site, with public swimming opportunities and better auditorium facilities for a wide variety of quality entertainment.
