AN after-school ecology club has earned a primary school an international award.
Children, teachers and parents involved in the Eco-Club at St John Boste RC Primary, in Washington, yesterday received a Green Flag from Sunderland Mayor Councillor Ken Murray. It was presented on behalf of the Eco-Schools initiative, a scheme managed by Environmental Campaigns which encourages pupils and staff to take practical steps to improve their environment by using less energy, recycling, and eating healthy food from local suppliers.
Spring fair: Blackhill Community Association Over 60s' Club will hold a spring fair next Wednesday, at 2pm, in the community centre in Derwent Street, Blackhill. There will be fancy goods, cake stalls, a tombola and a raffle.
Fell walk: A four-mile walk across Waldridge Fell and the boundary of Waldridge takes place on Sunday, May 19, as part of a Footsteps to Fitness series of walks organised by the Durham and Chester-le-Street Lifestyle Initiative. It starts at 11am in the car park of the Waldridge Tavern and is free.
Spiritualists meet: Spiritualist meetings are held on Mondays in the Vane Tempest Hall, Gilesgate, Durham, at 7pm. There will be a guest medium at some sessions.
COUNCILLORS' SURGERY: Labour Durham City councillors for the Belmont, Carrville and Gilesgate Moor wards will hold a surgery in Carrville Communal Hall, 34 Broomside Lane, Belmont, on Saturday between 10am and 11am.
FLOWER POWER: The North of England Rose, Carnation and Sweet Pea Society meets at Gateshead Civic Centre on Monday at 7pm when Morris Robinson will give a talk about sweet peas and other flowers. Admission is 25p.
BRIDGE CLASS: A class for people interested in learning to play bridge will be held at the Quebec Street Centre in Langley Park tomorrow, between 7pm and 10pm. For details call 0191-373 2415 or 0191-371 9608 before 10.30am or after 5pm.
GARAGE PLAN: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a detached double garage to be built at the back of a house in Church Street East, in Coxhoe.
FASHION CASH: A fashion show staged by Sunderland High School sixth-formers Randeep Dhillon and Richard Snaith raised £450 for the NSPCC. The event was backed by city stores including Top Shop, Debenhams and Burtons.
FITNESS CLASS: A keep fit class for women is held in the Vane Tempest Welfare Hall, Seaham, at 9.30am on Wednesdays. A creche is provided. Classes costs £1. For details call 0191-527 1251.
NEW CONSERVATORY: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a conservatory to be built at The Stables, Holywell Hall, Brancepeth.
