AN award for sporting excellence is the latest in a series of accolades for Sedgefield Community College.
The Sportsmark award highlights a dramatic change in the school, which 18 months ago was described as under-achieving in a report by Office for Standards in Education inspectors.
The college also gained a School Achievement Award for improved exam results and money to develop a trim trail and leisure track, and has been granted specialist sporting college status.
The Sportsmark award recognises excellence in sport and PE and that pupils have enough access to it.
At Sedgefield, 75 per cent of pupils take part in after-school sports - one of the major factors which persuaded the Youth Sport Trust to make the award.
Headteacher Lynne Ackland said: "In October we are hoping to get a Sportsmark gold award, which hardly anybody in the country has got. We think we can achieve that.
"Part of this award is to recognise participation rates, which are huge here compared with other schools.
