NURSERY children with bicycles are being drilled in the rules of the road.
Little ones as young as four years old are being schooled in vehicle recognition, the meaning of the colours of traffic lights and the importance of obeying simple rules.
"Youngsters are getting bicycles earlier and earlier so the sooner we can make them safety conscious the better," said Janice Harrington, headteacher at Beechwood Infants School, Middlesbrough, at the centre of a pilot cycle training scheme.
About 35 children, aged between four and seven, are being taught basic highway code and safety tips.
Mrs Harrington said having to wear safety helmets to take part in the scheme got the children off to a good start
