Billingham performed well at the Junior Open Meet at Felling with some impressive results. Eight gold, four silver and four bronze places were achieved.
Anthony Brown, Chris Wilkinson, Shane Hassall, Emma Wilson and Ian Kelly all taking home trophies. Chris Wilkinson won the Bagcat Award in his age group after all the points were accumulated.
All the swimmers swam extremely well gaining personal bests with big chunks taken off some times.
Anthony Brown was the only ten-year-old taking part bringing home medals in the 200m free where he came second, in the 400m free third. He attained fourth for his 50m free, fifth in both the 200 I.M. and 200m back, sixth in the 50m fly and ninth in the 50m breast.
There were two competitors in the 11-year-old category. Craig Grounds just missing out with a fourth in the 50m free, sixth for his 200m free and ninth in the 100m I.M. Chris Wilkinson gained five medals just missing out on a sixth.
He achieved first place in both the 50m fly and 50m free, second for his 50m back, third place in both the 100m I.M. and 200m free and a fourth in the 200m breast.
Three 11-year-old girls competed. Charlotte Brown coming 15th in the 50m breast, 20th in both the 100m I.M. and 200m free, 21st in the 50m fly, 22nd in the 50m free and 24th for her 50m back. Kerry Hassall another just missing out on a medal with a fourth for her 50m back, 12th in the 50m breast and 16th in the 50m free. Pippa Shepherd 16th in the 200m breast, 17th in both the 50m back and 50m breast, 18th in the 100m I.M., 19th in both the 400m free and 200m I.M. and 23rd in the 50m free.
Two 12-year-old girls taking part were:
Joanne Longster results: achieving a 12th in the 200m I.M., 14th in the 200m back, 17th in the 100m free and 19th in the 200m I.M. Lisa Sheehan coming tenth in the 100m breast, 15th in the 50m back and 25th in the 100m free.
Emma Shepherd was the only 13-year-old girl. She attained a tenth place for her 100m back, 11th in both the 400m free and 50m free, 14th in the 100m free, 15th in the 50m back and 16th in the 200m I.M.
There were two 14-year-olds. Competing for the boys was Shane Hassall swimming excellently attaining five medals. He gained a first in the 100m breast, second in the 50m free and a third place for his 100m back, 200m free and 100m free, in his 400m free he came fifth.
Emma Wilson accomplished two medals a first in the 100m breast and third for her 400m free. The remainder of her races just missing out on a medal coming fourth in the 100m free, 200m I.M. and 50m free.
Two boys competed in the 15-year-old category. Ian Kelly with medals for his 200m breast where he came second and third for his 200m free. He came sixth in the 100m free. Matthew Sheehan just missed out coming fourth in the 100m back and 200m free and seventh place in the 100m free.
At the Spa Town Distance Meet at Harrogate 14-year-old Jane Usher came tenth in the 800m free.
