COLLEAGUES last night paid tribute to a 48-year-old teacher who suffered a fatal heart attack in a busy leisure centre.
Stephen Simpson collapsed and died at the Dolphin Centre, in Darlington, on Sunday, despite the efforts of staff to save him.
Friends and colleagues at Deerness Valley Comprehensive School, Ushaw Moor, near Durham, paid their respects to the popular teacher, who was married with two children.
Isobel Ashmead, assistant headteacher, said: "Mr Simpson started as head of our geography department in September and his death is a tragic loss. He was a dedicated professional who worked very hard for the good of our students and he will be very sadly missed by staff and pupils alike."
Mr Simpson, of Westlands Road, Darlington, had just finished a swim and was on his way out of the centre when he inquired about Bank Holiday Monday opening at the reception desk. As he talked to staff he collapsed.
Employees, trained to use heart-start equipment, administered first-aid and fought to try to save his life. They twice managed to get him breathing again before paramedics arrived minutes later to take over the resuscitation.
But despite all their efforts, Mr Simpson was certified dead on arrival at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will take place in St Mary's Church, Cockerton, Darlington, on Tuesday, at 10.30am.
