WORK is progressing on a project to return a Hartlepool landmark to its former glory.
New railings are being erected on the walls around Redheugh Gardens, which surround the war memorial on the Headland.
Old concrete walls surrounding the gardens have already been demolished and replaced with limestone walling, matching the central memorial.
New railings are being fitted on the Cliff Terrace and Radcliffe Terrace sides of the gardens, to replace ones which were removed early last century.
The project is being funded by the North Hartlepool Partnership, which is also using money from the government's Single Regeneration Fund to revitalise the area.
Designed and forged by blacksmith Brian Russell, of Little Neasham Forge, near Darlington, and galvanised by Hartlepool company Lionweld Kennedy, the railings feature an overlapping wave design, which changes when viewed from different angles.
