TYRE safety checks will be carried out by police in Northallerton next week.
From Monday to Friday, North Yorkshire Police and experts from the Tyre Industry Council will be making spot checks on vehicles in the county town.
Campaign co-ordinator, Traffic Sergeant Nigel Atkinson, said: "Our aim is a simple one - to prevent death and injury. We are not asking for the driver's help, we are demanding it. It is every driver's responsibility to ensure he or she is not travelling on worn or defective tyres.
Last year, a survey of 700 vehicles across North Yorkshire found that one in ten had a tyre either right on the minimum depth or below it.
Sgt Atkinson said: "Unsafe tyres mean unsafe vehicles that cannot corner or brake as well as they should."
