AN estimated 1,500 young athletes converge on Catterick Garrison this weekend to take part in the North Yorkshire Youth Games.
The event on Sunday showcases the best young talent the area has to offer, with classes for athletes aged between nine and sixteen.
Organised by North Yorkshire Sport - a consortium of nine local authorities - the first events begin at 10.30am.
The bid to hold this year's games at Catterick Garrison was made jointly by Richmondshire District Council and the Ministry of Defence.
Council leisure chief, Geoff Thompson, said: "The games are a very prestigious event and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the MoD. We wish all the competitors the very best of luck and hope people will come and support our local sporting talent."
Vimy Barracks in Scotton Road hosts competitions in basketball, tennis, table-tennis, Sportsability, netball, hockey and rugby union.
The pitches in Smuts Road will be used for rugby league, cricket, football and orienteering.
Track and field events will take place at the garrison's athletics stadium in Leyburn Road.
