AN increase in basic allowances of Redcar and Cleveland councillors has been agreed in principle.
An independent panel has recommended that the 58 members of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council should get £5,820 as a basic sum, an increase of £40 on the year. The leader's allowance goes up £38 to £6,580.
The increases were agreed in principle at the council's annual meeting and will be discussed at the next full council meeting on May 23.
Council leader David Walsh said the increases were "modest" and based on the number of days members spend on council work and the local adult weekly wage.
Other details of the allowances are: deputy leader, £5,480 ( £5,420); lead councillor, £4,390 (£4,330); planning committee chairman £1,600 (£1,550); main opposition group leader £4,390 (£4,330); and mayor £6,580 (£6,500).
