THE Queen shared her 50th jubilee celebrations with thousands of her subjects in Durham on Wednesday.
The Ever Ready Brass Band, from Stanley, performed a specially-commissioned piece of music called The Golden Treasury as Her Majesty visited Durham Clayport Library in the city's new Millennium City complex.
The Queen saw the Northern Opera rehearsing Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci in the Gala Theatre and also officially opened the complex by unveiling a commemorative plaque in Millennium Place.
Earlier, Her Majesty and Prince Philip had lunch in Durham Castle and met Durham University Chancellor Sir Peter Ustinov and local dignitaries, including the city's new Mayor Eileen Rochford.
The Royal couple then went on a walkabout in the Market Place.
The jubilee celebrations are set to continue in the county on June 3, when a picnic with military bands and display teams will be staged in the grounds of the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Durham Art Gallery, at Aykley Heads, Durham.
It has received a grant of more than £3,000 from the Lottery fund Awards for All.
* The Queen has made a number of visits to the county - as a local historian's archive shows.
