APPLICATIONS are being invited for Darlington's Young Sportswinner competition for May.
The scheme, which celebrates the sporting achievements of youngsters throughout the borough, was launched in 1984 by Darlington Borough Council.
It recognises excellence in a variety of sports, separated into monthly categories, and culminates in an overall award in December.
Selection is based on candidates' sporting achievement and progress over the previous 12 months. There are individual and team awards, plus a coaching award available.
People at all levels of sporting achievement are encouraged to enter.
The closing date for nominations for this month's awards, which cover martial arts, squash, badminton, hockey and football, is May 24.
Previous winners include athlete Richard Smith, who broke the UK Under-23s 300m hurdle record last month.
He has now received an invitation to the Commonwealth Games trials in June.
Nominees must live in Darlington or be a bonafide member of a Darlington-based sports club, school, college or group.
Nomination forms can be obtained from the Eastbourne Sports Complex, the Dolphin Centre or Dixon Sports in the town.
