TRAFFIC calming measures introduced on a busy Sunderland road have been hailed a "tremendous success".
The first phase of the scheme in Hylton was completed in 2000 and has led to a 43 per cent reduction in accidents.
In the three years to 2000, there were 35 accidents and five children were killed or seriously injured.
But since then no children have died or been badly hurt and the accident total is down to 15.
The measures, carried out by Sunderland City Council, included installation of speed tables, speed cushions, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights at various points.
Councillor Ian Galbraith, cabinet member for highways, said: "Phase one has been tremendously successful in reducing accidents.
"We have consulted widely on our proposals for phase two and look forward to the same improvements in road safety."
Phase two, which will cover the road between Kayll Road and Trimdon Street, will include pedestrian crossings and bus lay-bys.
