PEDESTRIANS in Darlington can look forward to being safer on pavements thanks to a new initiative.
Pavements for People, which was launched in the town on Friday, seeks to raise awareness of the problems pedestrians face through the misuse of pavements and to clamp down on people who misuse them.
Campaigners say roadwork signs and A-boards make pavements a hazardous place for disabled and able-bodied pavement users.
Darlington Action on Disability (DAD) chairman Gordon Pybus said: "The launch of Pavements for People is just beginning, and with the assurance from Darlington Borough Council to clamp down on the abusers, the pavements of Darlington should be safer for those that they are intended for - people."
Darlington MP Alan Milburn joined representatives from DAD in the town's Market Square to launch the scheme.
"When access is easier for disabled people, it is easier for all," said Mr Pybus.
