A SERIAL sex attacker who handed himself in to police to confess his crimes has been jailed for ten years.
Robert Allen, 31, set out to humiliate women during his campaign and targeted women in the street.
Newcastle Crown Court heard how he turned up at Bedlington police station, in Northumberland, in January last year where he admitted attacks dating back to the late 1980s.
The court heard how Allen dragged a terrified 52-year-old into a back lane by putting his hand over her mouth, leaving her thinking she might be raped.
He admitted affray and four specimen charges of rape, and four of indecent assaults relating to two youngsters aged eight and ten.
Defence barrister Barry Robson told the court: "He wished to protect the public from himself."
The court heard that Allen is suffering from a pyschopathic disorder and will be treated at a psychiatric hospital during his sentence.
Allen, who is of no fixed address but has lived in Blyth, will be registered as a sex offender for life.
