A NATIONAL programme that teaches children about the dangers of building sites is being piloted for the first time in schools across the North-East.

Catastrophe Countdown has been devised by the Construction Industry Training Board and County Durham Education Business Partnership.

The roadshow educates primary school pupils about the dangers of building sites through a short play and story book showing what can happen when children trespass.

Ginny Williams, partner liasion manager at County Durham Education Business Partnership, said: "Children always need to be aware of the dangers of building sites, but it is particularly important at the moment with schools undertaking new building projects.

"Catastrophe Countdown was written with this specifically in mind and is a great example of industry and education working in partnership. It helps communicate a serious message in an effective and fun way, without worrying young children too much."

The roadshow has already visited Skerne Park Infant School, Darlington.

Headteacher Diane Teasdale said: "It is a really good experience for the students and communicates a very important message in an accessible way.

"Our pupils loved joining in with the story and dressing up in hard hats, and I'm sure they'll take on board the warnings they received."
