ENVIRONMENTALLY-aware youngsters saved tonnes of paper from going to landfill - and won a cash bonus for their school at the same time.
The pupils from Boroughbridge primary school collected more than 1,200 copies of the Yellow Pages that would otherwise have simply been thrown out.
And their efforts won the school a £500 cash prize in a competition which was run by Harrogate Borough Council and sponsored by Yellow Pages.
Second prize of £300 went to Rosset school in Harrogate, where pupils collected just over 1,000 copies of the directory and third prize of £200 went to St Cuthbert's primary in Pateley Bridge where pupils collected 494 books.
Council recycling officer Noel Scanlon said: "Boroughbridge school has succeeded all expectations in this competition.
"The children pulled out all the stops by collecting more than 1,200 old Yellow Pages, which is the equivalent of nearly five directories per pupil.
"The school deserves every praise for its huge efforts and a big thank-you from the council.
