A SURVEY is taking place which could eventually help boost the numbers of one of the country's endangered species.
The survey is being carried out by the Bellflask Ecological Survey Team which is looking in particular at the fish population in the river Ure between Hawes and Boroughbridge.
Survey leaders Brian and Susan Morland hope to extend existing surveys to include stretches of the river where very little is known about the fish population.
"We hope to give a true reflection of species distribution and productivity so that we can take steps towards protecting endangered species," said Mr Morland.
Building materials company Hanson, which has a quarry near Ripon, has given £500 towards the work and more help has come from the Environment Agency and other local companies.
The river ford at the quarry is regarded as one of the most important spawning sites for river lamprey, a rare fish which is about to be given protected species status.
The wash from the lorries crossing the river is said to benefit the spawning sites by keeping the gravel clean and free from algae and sediment.
"We're grateful to Hanson for this donation as it has helped us buy the vital nets, lamps and other equipment needed to make this project a success," said Mr Morland.
