WORKERS creating a junction to make the A66 safer for motorists at the Sadberge interchange returned after the weekend to find two pieces of plant equipment missing.
The Tarmac employees had taken delivery of a dumper truck and a roller before finishing for the weekend, and left them in a layby on the eastbound carriageway, between the village and Darlington.
Between midday on Saturday and 8am on Monday, the vehicles, worth a combined total of more than £18,000, were stolen. The vehicles were a Peled 750 mini-dumper, valued at £7,900, and a Bomag 80 roller, worth £10,200.
Both are small vehicles, generally used for pavement work or in narrow streets.
The dumper carries the plant number, 26059, while the roller is marked 23411.
Police want to trace the driver of a white Vauxhall Astra, seen pulling a red horsebox in the area between the times that the machines are thought to have been stolen.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Darlington police on (01325) 467681, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
