ILLEGALLY tall lorry loads are putting motorists' lives at risk on the A19 road in the region, it is being claimed.
Lorries are causing major problems on the route through Cleveland and County Durham, as they hit and damage bridges carrying roads over the A19.
Just weeks ago, a high load struck the Sandy Lane Bridge in Billingham, Teesside.
Work to straighten the damaged beams on the bridge was being carried out overnight last night.
Keith Polson, general manager of Autolink, which is in charge of the road, said: "These bridge strikes could result in a major road traffic accident and the repairs, which are expensive, are causing major disruption for road users. What we are looking at here is lorries which have been loaded too high and then strike the underside of bridges."
He said that police forces along the whole route of the A19 had been consulted and they would be taking action against high-loaded lorries.
