A CHAMPION of the North-East arts world has died after a short illness.

George Loggie, 65, chairman of Northern Arts and a former teacher, died earlier this week.

He had been involved with the group for more than 20 years as its vice-chairman and chairman.

The father of three devoted much of his life to being a champion of the arts and culture of the North-East.

He was former chairman and president of the Mid Northumberland Arts Group and has served on the boards of Newcastle Playhouse, Northumberland Theatre Company and Culture North East. He was a founding board director of the Music Centre, Gateshead.

When Prime Minister Tony Blair opened Northern Arts' new offices in Newcastle, he paid tribute to Mr Loggie and Northern Arts' work in making the arts accessible to everyone.

Regional director of Northern Arts, Andrew Dixon said: "George will be sadly missed by the arts community. He devoted himself to the arts in the North. The legacy of his work in championing the arts will be enjoyed for generations to come."

A funeral service will take place at St Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, at noon on Monday.
