A WEEKEND to encourage cultural awareness throughout the country has been awarded a £500 grant.
Darlington Borough Council has given the money to the Akal Federation which is hosting the community event at the town's Sikh temple.
The cost of the event on Sunday June 2, which has attracted interest from across the UK, has been estimated at £2,500.
It is hoped people from across the North-East will attend the event aimed at building bridges across religions, especially after the terrorism attacks on September 11.
Parminder Singh said: "The federation has recognised that ignorance is a major factor towards prejudicial tendencies.
"In order to reduce such tendencies, we believe there is a need to increase awareness about the Universal World Faith, culture and traditions, through the provision of awareness projects like the one in June."
The weekend has attracted limited funding and the Borough Council were eager to show their support.
Councillor Don Bristow said: "This is the kind of event the council should be seen to be helping. It is a worthwhile idea and we wish it success."
