Fifteen youngsters from East Cleveland took part in the Kirkleatham Fun Run on March 10 and raised almost £300 for the East Cleveland Athletics Tracks Association.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has pledged £40,000 towards the organisation's £400,000 athletics scheme project, which means a bid can now be submitted to the National Lottery for the rest of the cash.
The youngsters were given a special thank you by Redcar-based Para*ympian Tanni Grey-Thompson, a coach for the organisation.
Graham Hall, who has been working on the project for almost ten years, appealed to adults taking part in the Great North Run to follow the children's example and raise money for the project through sponsorship.
