A TALKING newspaper for the blind has been awarded more than £4,000 by The Northern Echo's parent company.
Darlington's Talking Newspaper moved into The Northern Echo's head office earlier this year when it found itself without a home.
And yesterday, US publisher of the newspaper Gannett gave the charity £4,700 to help replace its technical equipment. The money came from the Gannett Foundation, set up to help community organisations.
Peter Barron, editor of The Northern Echo, presented a cheque for £4,700 to chairwoman of the charity, Paddy Dinsdale.
Mr Barron said: "I am delighted to be able to give this money to the Talking Newspaper to help them continue their good work in the community, which we know is greatly appreciated by a lot of people."
Mrs Dinsdale said the charity was delighted to receive the money.
She said: "We give our profound and sincere thanks to The Northern Echo and Gannett. This money will make a huge difference."
