A SCHOOL has become the first in the region to be granted a prestigious sporting award.
Carmel RC Technology College, in Darlington, has been presented a Sportmark Gold award, which is the highest accolade given by Sport England.
Only 50 schools across the country have been granted gold status, which recognises education centres that provide good sports facilities for both lessons and after-school activities.
Last year, pupils from the school took part in more than 300 competitive matches in a wide range of sports.
The youngsters achieved 85 per cent A*-C GSCE grades and 100 per cent A-level pass rate in PE.
The college has set up links with a number of sporting clubs, including the Newcastle Falcons rugby union club.
Pupils have also been honoured at The Northern Echo Local Heroes Awards, and some students have represented both the county and country in a number of sports.
Headmaster James O'Neill said: "This award was not secured by one department but by many staff who give their free time to help promote a wide variety of activities.
