RECORD numbers of employers are turning to the experts to train their staff in the vital skills of fire awareness.
In the past twelve months, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service trained more than 2,000 employees in the county on their awareness courses.
Divisional Officer Steve Couchman said: "It is encouraging that so many employers are taking their responsibilities seriously and engaging the services of the professionals to train their staff.
"The training is usually carried out at the customers' own premises, which not only keeps staff downtime to an absolute minimum but ensures they are trained in surroundings that are familiar to the workforce."
The most popular course is a half-day one, but they can be tailor-made to suit the needs of those taking part.
They basically give those attending a knowledge of fire safety, instruction in how to prevent fires occurring, what to do if a fire occurs and how to safely tackle a fire.
A specially designed fire-rig is used to give those on courses the chance to use one of the many different fire extinguishers available, and each course finishes in a smoke-filled room exercise.
In addition to delivering training at the workplace, the brigade also runs a rolling programme of open days, where smaller companies can send just a few of their employees on the half-day course at the local fire station.
The next series of courses will be held in the Harrogate area. Other courses this year are being held in the Malton, Whitby, Northallerton and Skipton areas.
Prospective customers are advised to book at least two months in advance.
