A RARE first edition book by Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton was sold for £9,810 at Sotherby's in New York.
The book was signed by every member of the 1907 to 1909 South Pole expedition, including Yorkshireman John Robert Francis Wild.
Frank, as he was known to his friends and family, was born in the town of Skelton, at the time part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, now east Cleveland.
On the expedition, Wild, who was in charge of provisions, together with Shackleton and another man got within 97 miles of the South Pole before they were forced to turn back. Shackleton wrote a book about it called Heart of the Antarctic.
Last night, a spokesman for Sotherby's in New York said the edition number 185 of 350 copies sold for £9,810.
