PLANNERS are due to give the go-ahead this week for a £10m development dedicated to explorer Captain James Cook, only yards from the spot where his ships were built.
The Cook (RN) Charity Trust aims to open the project on Whitby harbourside, North Yorkshire.
It will include a 200-seat theatre, visitor centre and workshops where apprentices can learn how to build wooden boats.
The scheme is expected to provide about 800 jobs and attract an estimated 110,000 visitors.
"Cook's World is designed as a collection of individual buildings nestling together, very much in the Whitby tradition," says the trust.
Whitby Town Council, English Heritage, the National Park Authority, and other organisations in the town are backing the scheme.
