MUSIC, poetry, arts exhibitions, walks and workshops are all part of the Swaledale Festival, which opens on Friday.

The programme was decimated by the impact of foot-and-mouth disease last year. But there are hopes that this year's festival will attract bigger crowds than ever before, making up for the disappointments of last spring.

Swedes Jacob Lindberg and Anna Emillson open the event at St Andrew' Church, in Grinton, on Friday, mixing vocals with the sound of the lute. Jazz, orchestral performances, folk and a performance by Buddhist monks from Tibet will follow over the next fortnight at venues up and down Swaledale.

Walks follow routes around both Swaledale and Wensleydale while the traditional two-day Corpse Way Pageant leaves Keld at 10am on Monday, June 3, passing through Muker, and Gunnerside before an overnight halt at Feetham. The procession will continue the next day to Reeth before arriving at Grinton.

Programmes are available at Tourist Information Centres in Richmondshire or log on to www.swaledale-festival.care4free.net.
