A REVAMP of the roads through the heart of a Dales market town seems unlikely to include the pedestrianisation of one of its cobbled streets.
As many as 40 people attended a public meeting in Hawes to debate the outcome of a traffic survey conducted by the county council.
A raft of minor projects including dropped kerbs and new footpaths, won universal approval.
However, the idea that two-way traffic should be reintroduced on the A684 on the western entrance to the market place proved more controversial.
A final vote went against the suggestion that the cobbled street from just outside the town's famous Ropemaker's workshop to the market place should be pedestrianised.
Instead, the majority favoured a 20mph speed limit, with only part of the road dedicated to shoppers and others on foot.
